Empowering young girls to be physically and mentally fit

Belmore PCYC Manager, Andrew Shenouda, is a big believer of health and fitness and the positive effect it has on both the physical and mental wellbeing.
Seeing a need in the youth community and thanks to a $7,4000 donation from Canterbury League Club which covered all of the program costs, over 80 students from Wiley Park Girls High School and Beverly Hills Girls High School have each spent a term being put through their paces by the team at Belmore PCYC.
The weekly boot camp activities, which include boxing, circuit exercise, agility work, strength and conditioning, are run by Renae Michaels, an experienced female trainer with a background working with women from culturally diverse backgrounds.
“Renae’s classes offer benefits such as muscle toning, improved balance and coordination, and are an effective cardiovascular workout. These young women are participating in fun exercise activities which will help maintain their fitness, well-being and improve their confidence while at the same time, allowing them opportunity to get to know their peers and build friendships,” said Andrew from Belmore PCYC.
“PCYC is well-recognised as a safe place for youth to come and be involved in a community activity which is not directly linked to school. Our goal for this program is to empower these young women and increase their confidence levels so they can be better citizens for our community.”
“There are only positive advantages when exercising regularly especially when you start the habit from a young age – it can help manage stress, depression, anxiety, strengthen self-esteem, enhance mood and boost mental alertness,” said Dr George Peponis OAM, Chairman of Canterbury League Club.
Belmore PCYC was established as an outlet for youth to get active and involved in the community whilst also reducing youth crime. Aside from boxing, the club also offers karate, yoga, basketball, weightlifting, and dancing.
Renae runs ladies only boxing classes at Belmore PCYC on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays. Those interested in participating can contact 9759 4934 or firstname.lastname@example.org
