Wrestling for a great cause

Belfield RSL was transformed into a site of wrestling mania on Friday 24 October to raise funds for children with autism.

Over 300 wrestling fans, families and kids turned up to the special charity event organised by Lony Lamy and Veronica Ayoub, aka ‘Mr & Mrs Fury’, and presented by Furious Wrestling Productions.

In total, over $3780 was raised from ticket sales, raffles and collection tins passed around on the night. All monies will be donated to Autism Awareness.

Hairy moustaches to start Movember conversation

Over 60 staff members including Canterbury CEO Dave Brace and COO Jon Brain have taken on the challenge to grow a moustache to raise funds and awareness for men’s health during the month of Movember.

Canterbury Mo Bros and Mo Sistas, affectionately known as the ‘Canterbury Moustache League’, have a goal to raise $5000 over the course of the month with Canterbury pledging to match every dollar, up to $10 000, fundraised by participating staff. All funds raised go back to the Movember Foundation.

Art helping youth with disabilities to express their voices

The Horizon Theatre Company is “Ready and Able” to help young people living with disabilities express themselves through art thanks to a $13,396 donation from Canterbury League Club.

“Ready and Able” is a special program run by Horizon with aim to provide young people in the Canterbury local government area with access to creative and recreational activities. Participants are matched to activities based on their individual talents, abilities and interests, and include workshops in drama, music, costume and make-up, puppetry and photography.

Student scholarships ease financial burden

For the past four years, Canterbury League Club has been working with Wiley Park Girls High School to provide education scholarships to their Year 7 students.

Since 2010, Canterbury has donated over $15,000 worth of scholarships to 22 students which were used to purchase school uniforms and backpacks, and pay for school fees and school photos. Each student receives $500 per year for two years, held in the school’s trust.

“$500 is a big help and provides a very positive start to secondary education,” said Maureen Davis-Catterall, Principal of Wiley Park Girls High.

Ode to the Bulldogs

They say history is written by the winners, not the losers.

It has been over a week since 2014 NRL Grand Final; we’ve had time to recollect ourselves, take down the blue and white streamers, and return back to a regular routine. The South Sydney Rabbitohs were crowned victors after a gruelling 30-6 win over Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs, in a titan match best described as gutsy, determined and uncompromising.

In the end, their fight to the finish just wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs to bring home that elusive premiership trophy, continuing the 10 year drought.

Excitement of Grand Final Day

The excitement was palpable in the air and the atmosphere festive in a wash of blue and white – on Sunday 5 October hundreds of Bulldogs supporters descended on Canterbury League Club to watch the 2014 NRL Grand Final play out.

For fans that couldn’t make it to ANZ Stadium to watch it live, Canterbury was the next best place to be to watch the game. It was operating at full capacity with over 2000 members and guests watching the game on over 20 purposely-installed television screens all around the Club, and thousands more fans cheering on the Bulldogs from the streets of Belmore.
