GROW Community helping people overcome mental illness

A fundraising initiative by the Rotary Club of Campsie has seen $20,000 raised on behalf of the GROW Residential Community for on-going repairs and upgrades.

Fundraising through weekly community markets and BBQs at Bunnings Greenacre, Campsie Rotary has managed to raise a whopping $15,000 with the help of their members and volunteers. A further $5,000 came from the Canterbury League Club.

Don Bosco Home a safe refuge for homeless youths

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2011 survey, more than 47,000 young people under 25 years are homeless in Australia.

One option available to homeless youths is to turn to the Don Bosco Home in Marrickville run by Youth Off The Street (YOTS). Founded in 1991 by Father Chris Riley, this refuge provides safe accommodation and support service to adolescents 15 to 18 years. In the past year they have helped 258 young people find their feet again.

iPads a technological boon for hospital

Waiting times at the Emergency Department (ED) at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead are being dramatically reduced with the introduction of 15 new iPads.

The iPads, used by staff to record patient information, was implemented after a successful two month trial mid last year.

“Parents like that the information is recorded quickly and at the bedside, particularly in the observation area where many of the children are critically-ill,” said Leonnie Dawson, Nurse Manager at the Emergency Department of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

New floors revitalises Lakemba clubhouse

Recently installed new floors have given the Lakemba Sports & Recreation Club (LSC) a fresh lease on life.

Established in the 1917, LSC is one of the oldest sports clubs in the area and historically was home to numerous soccer and cricket teams. Their original clubhouse was built in the 80’s and over the course of time, high foot traffic had taken a toll on its floors.

After hearing of their plight, Canterbury League Club donated $4090 to cover the cost of replacing the entire floor.
