Lakemba Club unveils new Asian restaurant

A new noodle and dumpling bar is serving up delicious meals to the hungry patrons of The Lakemba Club.

Run by the same successful team that manages the world-famous The Dynasty Restaurant at the Canterbury League Club, the new Imperial Noodle and Dumpling Bar is offering noodles and traditional house-made dumplings that made her sister restaurant so popular in the first place.

Patrons can expect, among other things, fresh prawn dumplings (har gao), steamed BBQ pork buns (char siu bao), steamed Shanghai style pork dumplings and steamed vegetarian dumplings.

McGrath Breast Care Nurses supporting families in need

Statistics show that one in every eight Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the time they turn 85. 

The McGrath Foundation believes that every person living with breast cancer, regardless of location or background, should have access to a breast care nurse. They currently have 100 McGrath Breast Care Nurses spread across Australia but estimates that 150 are needed to ensure that every family in this situation has access to optimal care.

Starlight putting a smile on kids’ faces

For seriously-ill children life can seem like one giant merry-go-round of hospital and doctor visits, medicines and painful operations.

It can be a never-ending cycle for some but this is where organisations like the Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia come in.

Formed in 1988, the organisation helps brighten the lives of chronically-ill children and relieve the anxiety of being sick with their in-hospital programs including the Starlight Express Rooms with Captain Starlight and their out-of-hospital Wishgranting program.

Fighting fit for taekwondo champ

In their free time, most other 15 year olds would be hanging out with their friends, going to the movies or playing computer games.

This 15 year old is currently training seven times a week over six days to prepare for the 2014 US Open Taekwondo competition to be held later in February.

“It is mentally and physically exhausting but I love competing and I love the adrenaline rush that I get when I step on the mat before a fight,” said Deanna.

Variety of sub-sports clubs at Canterbury

Asides from being proud supporters of the Bulldogs, Canterbury League Club also plays host to many other sub-sports clubs that call Canterbury home.

Some of the sub-clubs on offer include the Bulldogs Squash Club, Canterbury Community Backgammon Club, Earlwood Ex-Servicemen’s Senior Citizens Touring Club, Belfield RSL Social Golf Club and Canterbury League Indoor Sports Club to just name a few.

Bulldogs a hit in The Bay

Over 500 Bulldogs fans excitedly gathered at The Bay Sports Club to welcome their heroes at the annual Bulldogs Family Day on January 10.

The event kicked off at 1pm with the Bulldogs split into two groups – one group participated in a social game of bowls while the other half mingled with fans taking photos and providing autographs – before swapping over.

Players from the Bateau Bay Men’s Bowling Club were at hand on the day to provide the Bulldogs players with advice and quick how-to tips before teaming up to play a round of bowls.

$4,000 cash prizes in Mahjong Grand Finals

8 January 2014

Mahjong Australia ended their first season at Canterbury with $4,000 in cash prizes given away at yesterday’s Grand Final game.

Two winners, Yuen To and Johnny Lo, won the grand final prize of $1,000 each; beating out 97 other players who participated on the day for season points and cash prizes.

Second prize winners, Donald Wong and Wei Wang, received $400 each in Canterbury’s day and night game sessions respectively.

Nikolaos Kotrotsos is one happy Canterbury Member after walking away with $10,000 cash from our recent Membership Renewal Competition.

His name was drawn out of 19,701 entries. To receive an entry Members had to join or renew before 31 December 2013.

Nikolaos was delighted to find out he was the winner. He said he will be putting the money towards his daughters education.
