Gardening project to benefit local seniors

Canterbury League Club’s donation of $2500 to the Tripoli and Mena Association’s Gardening for Health Project has equipped seniors with the necessary equipment to improve their much beloved garden.

Located in the backyard of the Lakemba senior day care centre, the garden has existed for several years in a makeshift capacity maintained by almost thirty seniors on a weekly basis.

CHEFS BATTLE IT OUT FOR CANTERBURY MASTERCHEF

It was a battle of knives and culinary flair when Canterbury’s chefs came together in a MasterChef-style cook off for the title of Canterbury MasterChef 2014.

Twenty-two chefs competed in several heats the weeks prior with the winners of each heat battling it out on the final night. The six finalists were Justin O’Bree, Nick Cooke, Claudio Ruggero, Nashat Debabneh, Sameer Sangraula and Nick Stergenakis.

Staff Christmas Party a fairyland delight

Canterbury’s staff Christmas party was a slightly different affair this year with the Club booking out the entire venue of the converted industrial warehouse café and restaurant, The Grounds of Alexandria.

It was a special evening – the mood was set early on in the night with the rustic and industrial feeling of the venue brightly lit with hundreds of candles and thousands of fairy lights decorating the organic gardens full of vegetables, edibles flowers, herbs and fresh fruit.

Final Movember tally

Canterbury League Club’s Movember team have managed to raise $12,896 in the popular month-long moustache growing challenge.

62 Canterbury staff members, including CEO Dave Brace and COO Jon Brain, took on the challenge to grow a moustache in support of raising awareness for men’s health. They had a goal to raise $5,000 for the Movember Foundation; with Canterbury pledging to match every dollar fundraised by staff.

Canterbury Moustache League has had an amazing month and have raised $5,955 so far which is a fantastic achievement considering the fundraising goal was set at $5,000. Canterbury has pledged to match every dollar raised by staff which means the Movember Foundation will be receiving a generous cheque from us next week.

Pre-construction works have begun

The first stage of Canterbury’s renovations have commenced with excavations underneath Flame Pizza + Grill to prepare for future back of house works. This initial construction work involves the excavation underneath Flame but will only result in minimal disruption to Members and Guests. Flame is now closed for lunch on Wednesday and Thursday because of the excavation noise but it still trades for lunch Friday to Sunday. Dinner and breakfast trade is unaffected.

School multicultural festival bringing students together

Face painting, competitions, food stalls, performances and fun sporting activities transformed the grounds of Canterbury Boys High School (CBHS) for their annual Cantervale festival on Friday 14 November.

Sponsored by Canterbury League Club, Cantervale is a celebration of cultural diversity within the school’s student population – 92 per cent of CBHS students come from a non-English speaking background.

A Canterbury League Club donation of $20,000 to Variety – the Children’s Charity really has the ability to create wonders for children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs.

This is the story of four-year-old Harry from Ashbury, one of the lucky recipients who received a new walker through a portion of Canterbury’s contribution.
