Tackles, shoves, moaning players, back chat and nit-picking coaches are all part of the game but Canterbury-Bankstown District Rugby League Referees Association’s (CBDRLRA) referees know how to take it in their stride.

Refereeing is not a job without its own dangers but CBDRLRA tries to make sure their referees stay safe by continual on-field training and support.

PCYC BELMORE INTO LIFTING WEIGHTS

Don’t be surprised if a future Olympic champion in weightlifting springs up from the unlikeliest of places – Police Citizens Youth Clubs (PCYC) Belmore.

A $20,000 grant from Canterbury League Club will see one of the rooms at PCYC Belmore converted into a brand new weightlifting area complete with weights, bars and platforms.

Older people with pets can count on POOPs

For a lot of socially isolated people over the age of 65 with pets, one of the more disturbing issues is what happens to their beloved animal when they are gone.

Many of them often have no family or other support networks that can look after their pets while they are away - this is where RSPCA Pets of Older Persons program come in.

More commonly known as POOPs, volunteers of this program will provide foster care and boarding services to these animals or find them new homes after their previous owners have passed or are in respite or hospital.

Mahjong now at Canterbury!

Last Tuesday Canterbury League Club, in conjunction with Mahjong Australia, held their first ever mahjong league tournament in the Paragon Room.

More than 90 players attended the event for the chance to win a share of the $1000 prize pool with first and second place taking home $400 and $200 respectively.

Mahjong Australia is the country’s first tournament style league and has been organising games since early 2008 in various clubs around Sydney. It is the only totally free-based league in the world and follows the World Series of Mahjong rules system.

Letting Kids Be Kids

Canterbury Leagues Club is excited to partner with Australian Kookaburra Kids Foundation by donating $10 000 to them through the ClubGrants Scheme. This grant will help fund programs and two-day camps free of charge to children living in families where a parent is affected by mental illness
