C-Life raises money for Movember

C-Life team Can-tache-bury did their bit for men’s health in Movember by growing moustaches and raising a total of $1614.

For the first time, five Mo’Bros and one Mo’Sista from the gym took part in the month long event which raises worldwide awareness for prostate and testicular cancer, and men’s’ mental health.

Their top-earning fundraiser was member John Kospetas who raised $695 in donations. Canterbury League Club supported Movember by donating another $499 and another $420 came from the C-Life Christmas Party ticket proceeds.

Celebrate Chinese New Year at Canterbury!

Basic life skills necessary for children

For many school children the concept of budgeting, debt management or preparing for a formal job interview is a difficult one at the very least.

Parents are usually the first port of call to teach these life lessons however not all are properly equipped to do so. The situation is further exacerbated as schools do not have the right capacity to teach these life skills in their curriculum.

Tasty tours highlight multicultural hubs

Food tours are a great way to try new flavours, uncover hidden food gems and explore different parts of Sydney previously not visited.

One such food tour, called Taste Tours, was established in 2010 and has been operated by the Benevolent Society as a long term community development initiative of their Growing Communities Together (GCT) project.

“GCT works by building local capacity to address social exclusion and cultural disharmony and to strengthen disadvantaged communities,” said Cathy Quinn, Manager of Business and Product Development for Benevolent Society.

Education keystone for just society

It has always been said that death and education are life’s great levellers to social inequality.

Edmund Ignatius Rice was one such man who believed in the latter; education was vital to achieve a more just and fair community by empowering people with the tools to break the cycle of poverty.

He may have lived in the early 1800s but his philosophical legacy continues to this day through the efforts of the Edmund Rice Centre for Justice & Community Education, Christian Brothers and organisations such as the Edmund Rice Chair at Australian Catholic University (ACU).

Bring your Christmas wish list and camera because Santa Claus has arrived at Canterbury.

Santa and his helpers will be at the Club daily until the 22nd December from 6:30-8:30pm to take photos and accept letters to the North Pole. Santa’s mailbox will be open all day and letters can be dropped off at any time.

Christmas decorations have also gone up so come on down to the Club to see them and take a few photos with the family. Don’t forget to also take a few snaps outside with the dazzling eleven meter Christmas tree and seven meter tall Santa on his reindeer.

Cultural celebration brings community together

Students and staff of Canterbury Boys High School (CBHS) recently enjoyed a day of food, entertainment and festivities at their annual Cantervale festival.

Held by the school, Cantervale celebrates the school’s cultural diversity that exists within their student population – 92 percent of their students come from a non-English speaking background.

Numerous food stalls were set up on the day serving up delicious offerings of Portuguese, Turkish, Arabic and Pacific Islander foods.

Sixty-nine long service awards were given out at the recent Canterbury League Club Staff Service Awards.

These awards recognises Canterbury employees who have provided the Club with 5, 10, 15, 20, 35 or 40 years of service.

Three of the longest serving Canterbury employees recognised on the night were Christine Mitchell, Eva Silvestri and Bridget Burchell. These lovely ladies were presented with flowers, a gift and a 40 Year Award certificate. Another noteworthy mention goes to George Cocokios for providing 35 years.

Local school children in Papua New Guinea were recently treated to a visit from the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs as part of their ‘Bulldogs in the Community’ program.

Bulldogs representatives included recently retired winger Steve Turner, and NRL players Mitch Brown and Tim Browne. A number of up and coming stars like Lachlan Burr, Harlan Alaalotoa and Adam Elliott as well as a number of Canterbury and Bulldogs administrative staff also flew over for the week-long trip.
